On August 2, I spent some time at Eide Road, near Stanwood, in Snohomish County. My goal was to get some comparison shots of Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs. Sometimes, when a yellowlegs is alone, with no other birds nearby for size comparison, I have trouble with the ID. I have used primary projection (the extent to which the folded primaries extend beyond the tertials) and primary extension (the extent to which the folded primaries extend beyond the tail) for ID, but sometimes that is of no use. Perhaps due to molt or feather wear. In the attached photos, the difference is clear between these 2 species. It's not always this easy...
