Yesterday on the beach at Pacific Beach I found two dead Common Murres. Today I located a live Murre sitting on the wet sand near the surf where the creek meets the ocean. It allowed me to approach within 25 feet or so without apparent disturbance. I observed it do a little preening and it stretched its wings a couple of time. It made no attempt to move from its position. There were no apparent external injuries. My thought was that it was waiting to die, but I don't know. Have there been other reports of dead or dying murres?
