I spent from about 7am-10:55am up at the base of Road 1515 on Larch
Mountain, Clark County this morning (directions available if interested).
Due to rolling on the many round pebbles on Road 1515 and kissing the
ground, I acquired a rather large red souvenir on my knee so decided to do
a Big Sit instead of heading all the way to the location where the Rock
Wrens have been seen this month. Big Sit results (44 species) in no
particular order:

Red-tailed Hawk: 1
Turkey Vulture: 1
American Kestrel: 1
Band-tailed Pigeon: 10
Red-shafted Flicker: 2
Downy Woodpecker: 1
Hairy Woodpecker: 1
Anna's Hummingbird: 3
Rufous Hummingbird: 2
Willow Flycatcher: 2
Olive-sided Flycatcher: 1
Steller's Jay: 3
Swainson's Thrush: 1
American Robin: 6
WESTERN BLUEBIRD: 10 (one flock which briefly landed and then took off
heading northeast - new county bird for me!)
Common Raven: 4
House Wren: 1
Bewick's Wren: 1
Chestnut-backed Chickadee: 1
Black-capped Chickadee: 2
Golden-crowned Kinglet: 2
Brown Creeper: 1
Red-breasted Nuthatch: 3
Violet-green Swallow: 1
Vaux's Swift: 3
Black-throated Gray Warbler: 1
Yellow Warbler: 1
Hermit Warbler: 1
TOWNSEND'S WARBLER: 1 (first of Fall for me)
Orange-crowned Warbler: 3
MacGillivray's Warbler: 2
Yellow-rumped Warbler: 1
Cedar Waxwing: 8
CHIPPING SPARROW: 2 (I don't see these in Clark County very much)
White-crowned Sparrow: 6
Dark-eyed Junco: 15
Spotted Towhee: 1
Black-headed Grosbeak: 1 (getting late for these)
Western Tanager: 16
Pine Siskin: 12
American Goldfinch: 3
Purple Finch: 3
Evening Grosbeak: 75 (+/- 10%)
Red Crossbill: 156 (+/- 10% - many flocks constantly flying over.) My
previous high count in the county was about 20 Only counted birds flying
northeast. Some birds flew back so I reduced the count by that many birds
to try to reach an accurate count.

The only birds I saw on my walk and not during the Big Sit were:

Hammond's Flycatcher: 1 (in full song!!)
Wilson's Warbler: 2

On my way down the mountain about a half mile before the road turns to
paved again, there was a mixed swallow/swift flock comprised of:

Vaux's Swift: 10
Violet-Green Swallow: 4
Tree Swallow: 5
Barn Swallow: 4
PURPLE MARTIN: 1

I'm heading up again tomorrow to do a day to day comparison. I don't know
if the north northeast wind had anything to do with the number of Red
Crossbills. Some flocks flew within 10 feet of my head!

Keep your eyes and ears skyward (unless you are walking on round pebbles)
