Comments: Sharon Aagaard and Stan Wood birded with 18 others at Eastside Audubon's monthly bird walk at Lake Sammamish State Park on August 17, 2015, from 8:00 am to noon. Skies were sunny and clear, 58-75F, 0-1 mph. HIGHLIGHTS: 7 COMMON MERGANSERS were relaxed and lounging while preening on a lake log, with one in the water; We enjoyed watching a perched and preening first-year OSPREY in Patty's scope, and another splash feet first into the lake (at one point, there were 5 perched birds on the lake edge snags); 2 AMERICAN COOTS, one juvenile; 2 BAND-TAILED PIGEONS flew over; 1 VAUX'S SWIFT; Adam saw a male RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD zip by; 3 sightings of RED-BREASTED SAPSUCKER, all had light reddish and very messy head feathers; 1 female PILEATED WOODPECKER was foraging up close and personal and called a few times; we were thrilled to watch a nearby OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER sally out several times to catch bugs and re-perch (North America's longest distance migrating fly catcher); 3 WESTERN WOOD-PEWEES; 3 quiet WILLOW FLYCATCHERS; 1 quiet PACIFIC-SLOPE FLYCATCHER in a mixed flock; 9 WARBLING VIREOS in a mixed flock, with lots of bird chasing; 1 NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOW with many VIOLET-GREENS AND BARNS; 4 mostly quiet SWAINSON'S THRUSHES; 5 warbler species: ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, YELLOW WARBLER, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, and BLACK-THROATED GRAY. Some heard a WESTERN TANAGER and I had a brief glimpse of a male foraging with a mixed flock; 2 BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAKS; and 2 EVENING GROSBEAKS flew over head while calling. 52 species for the day, 129 for the year. Critters: Eastern Gray Squirrels, bunnies and a River Otter. The next bird walk is FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 25. No pre-registration, just show up depending on your mood or the weather. Since this is a state park, a Discover Pass is necessary to park ($10 daily, $30 annual). We meet in the large parking lot to the left just inside the main park entrance, now signed as the Costco Parking lot, but we meet at the far end towards the lake (not the boat launch entrance). Submitted from BirdLog NA for Android v1.9.6
52 species (+1 other taxa)
