Tweets, Tues I birded Hoquiam STP and Ocean Shores with Doug Martin and Brent Townley, and on Wed Tokeland, Bottle Beach, Hoquiam STP, and the Ocean Shores Jetty with Dave Annonen. Tues highlights:
- Lesser Sand Plover! approx 1/2 mi S of the casino around 7:30pm, as reported by others -- thank you ladies from Tacoma/Gig Harbor!
- Incredible numbers of Sooty Shearwater all day cruising and feeding beyond the breakers from the jetty south and into the harbor to the casino north. From around 6-7pm (at least) a stream was entering the harbor and passing opposite Damon Pt on the Westport side, we could not tell where they were headed. One bird passed within a couple hundred yards of the north side of Damon Pt near the base just east of the marina. (I once had one fly nearly over the shore at the same spot.)
- Black-legged Kitiwake with roosting gulls (a confusing lot!) at the OS STP
- Pacific Golden Plover at Oyhut Game Range pond, along with a Baird's Sandpiper (heard), 3 Lesser Yellowlegs, and scads of peeps -- near high tide around 4pm.
- More than 20 Red-throated Loons along the game range shore near the dividing channel. Another 24 or so congregated right at the base of Damon Pt (seemingly oblivious to all the people there), almost certainly a different group. A few Common Loons and at least 2 Pacific Loons also near shore, and a probable but distant Black Scoter (pair?)
- Bonaparte's Gull at Hoquiam STP
Wed highlights:
- 5 swallow spp at Tokeland (at low tide; could not find any Elegant Terns or curlews)
- Snowy Plover 1.8 mi S of the Cranberry Beach Rd access, Grayland; tracks indicate lots of activity here
- Red Knot at Bottle Beach
- (By the time we reached Ocean Shores around 4pm the wind was prohibitive, and we headed home when Dave's wife called about getting evacuated due to a fire near Onalaska)
Other reports heard about:
- Large numbers of "rockpipers," especially tattlers, at the Ocean Shores(?) jetty
Good birding (and conferencing)!
