Overcast sky at the start cleared up a bit to partly cloudy (62degF -
73degF) for the "lucky" 13 of us that toured the Joint Base Lewis McChord
(JBLM) Eagles Pride golf course. "Lucky" in that we added two more species
for our total list: BANK SWALLOW and TOWNSEND'S WARBLER. The warbler was on
our short list of expected species (the habitat is typical for the species),
but the Bank Swallow was not. The swallows (two) were with a flock of Barn
Swallows at the aeration pond near where we start. And though our start was
auspicious, very few birds were seen after that for nearly an hour. In fact,
when we arrived at the comfort station, we were about 45 minutes ahead of
our normal pace. Soon, however, things picked up and we added quite a few
more species, including WARBLING and CASSIN'S VIREOS, BLACK-THROATED GRAY
WARBLER, WESTERN WOOD-PEWEE, WILLOW FLYCATCHER, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, and
WESTERN TANAGER. The Cassin's Vireos and at least one of the tanagers were
singing.



The JBLM Eagles Pride GC birders meet the third Thursday of each month at
8:00AM. Starting point is Bldg # 1514, Driving Range Tee, Eagles Pride Golf
Course, I-5 Exit 116, Mounts Road Exit. Upcoming walks include the

Bank Swallow 2 Two were in the willows at the aeration pond near the
maintenance offices. Barn Swallows were also there. The one bird facing us
had a very distinct line running down the center of the breast from the
breast band, which was more distinct than that of juvenile Tree Swallows.
Belly much whiter than that of Northern Rough-winged Swallows.
