I usually have my feeder open to welcome all and everything to join in if they want some food. I don't discourage the squirrels as they just join in for some supplement to the all ready bounties of the area. Open feeders provide much for Stellers and the swarms of Grosbeaks. I put up a new fat block every two days about, for all the birds too. The Woodpeckers and Sapsuckers.. right down to the smallest of birds.. along with critters here too, enjoy that.

This past few weeks though, I have had an unusual pest at the feeder. Normally, I would love to see my Hairy Woodpecker. As a daily visitor.. sometimes every few minutes visitor, I have gotten to watch the family grow each year. BUT.... Grrrrr.. the past two weeks he's been at my birdfeeders.. the ones with Sunflower Seeds. Why Grrrr? They don't want the seeds.. but he is busy kicking out all the seeds to look for any bugs that might be on the wood. He will proceed to flick out a cup of seeds before leaving and trying again later. I've tried to add dried meal worms just for him, but none of my birds seem to enjoy that. I guess I will have to take them down, bleach and dry them for a week as to deter this little pest. Or, break out the macro and start shooting macro of his face.. since he could care less if I walk up to him. Yesterday, I almost reached out and just picked him up to remove him from the feeder.. haha I guess.. it's time to clean the feeders.. earwigs perhaps. They seem to be the only ones attracted to the cedar feeders.
