Tweets, Thur I visited Hoquiam STP at high tide (12:30) and found the two Elegant Terns among many Caspians (their numbers are down from previous weeks). Good viewing with scope from the east roadway shoulder. Smaller size and more slender but long bill stand out. The juvenile's bill is quite yellow. (Juvenile Caspians show yellower bill but have dark chevrons on upperparts, as per Sibley.) I heard at least thrice the typical disyllabic call, not as grating as Caspian, plus twice a single, lower-pitched croak or creak. Also present: 430 (or 330? lost count) Marbled Godwits (no oddballs), several Killdeer with Semi-palmated Plovers plus a flight of around 40 more, a dozen Least and a couple Western Sandpipers. Also 4 gull spp, mainly Californias, Brown Pelicans, and a modest assortment of dabbling ducks, mainly Mallards. Good birding!
