Both times I?ve seen the 3 SURFBIRDS on the north jetty (Saturday, 12/26/15 and today, 12/28/15), the tide was out, exposing the barnacles that they feed on.

So, showing up at a time other than high tide will probably increase your chances of spotting them.

Also, the south end of the pier offers the best view of the entire length of the north jetty, as well as a decent view of the south jetty.
