Rob and Tweeters,



I have always said that people remind me of European Starlings-- a bird
that I spent many years studying as a graduate student and as a professional
biologist. Individually, Starlings are an attractive, adaptable, and
fascinating animal. However, when they gather in flocks of thousands, they
can be a royal pain in the butt. Much the same can be said about people!

The good thing about people is that there are bunch of them who care about
wildlife, habitat and make efforts to protect those things. The problem with
people is that there are way too many of them. Billions. I stopped posting
rare bird sightings to tweeters five years ago, and I have no regrets about
it. Rare bird sightings quickly become a circus, with too many clowns. Call
me selfish if you like, but the birds are having their own issues of
survival and don't need the extra stress of too many humans, too close. And
we always get too close.
