Hi, Tweeters,Henry and I started the New Year of birding at 4:30 a.m. with a Barn Owl, followed by Great Horned, Barred, Saw-whet, and Pygmy--thanks to a great guide, Chris!
After lunch we took a walk along the new bicycle/walking trail in Centralia. Three Kestrels were working the area along I-5 and one was perched right on top of the road sign for the exit to Applebees. We had lots of other great birds along the 3.5 mile trail.
We were sitting at Subway at I-5 Exit 81 and I could see a cylindrical aerie in a tree on the west side of the freeway. Since I had my binocs handy I followed an eagle in flight that landed in a conifer next to the eagle nest. Then I saw a second eagle in the nest. This would be easy to spot from Subway--the tree is across from Plummer Lake--at least until the tree gets its leaves! Looked like a nesting pair.
What was your first bird of 2015?
