Tina Blade and I (plus about 100 other folks!) visited Eide Rd in
Stanwood yesterday in hopes of seeing the LONG-EARED OWLS. A pair of
them were roosting in dense shrubs, affording only peek-aboo photos.
SHORT-EARED OWLS were abundant and active throughout our visit (noon
until close to sunset). At least one pair of SEOW's would
occasionally appear to be jousting, with nice displays of aerial
gymnastics. This was the first time at Eide Road that I've seen so
many SEOW's, and the first time they outnumbered NORTHERN HARRIERS.
As we left, a flock of SNOW GEESE passed in front of a waxing moon. I
doubt they realized what a visual cliche that is--they were just
being geese, and lovely at that.
