Nice discussion about turtles. My neighbors near Freeland on Whidbey Island have a pond on their property where Western Painted Turtles nest every year. The neighbor somehow routinely catches the females nesting and protects the nests with chicken wire until the hatchlings emerge. Nevertheless, those are the ONLY baby turtles I have seen in the various ponds here. Adults are fairly common. We also see the occasional Red-eared Slider and Map Turtle.

One thing I have always wondered about...I have a vet business here and folks always bring me interesting things. One summer, twenty years ago, three different people brought me three different hatchling box turtles. I know they were different because I marked their carapace margins with a little nail polish. Is it possible they could have bred or did someone release a gravid female? I haven't seen one, adult or juvenile, since.
