Hello Joe,

Great, sharp photos showing all important features for differential identification of the two species make this one clear: a juvenile Sharp-shinned Hawk.
The very thin legs leave no doubt.
The type of chest streaking, rounded head shape, appearance of location of eyes relative to head shape, small size, body shape and head color pattern shown in your photos are all consistent with juvenile Sharp-shinned.
Not enough information for me to determine the sex of this bird. As you know, there is some overlap within sizes ranges in males and females accipiters.

My opinion and I'm sticking to it.
Thanks for sharing these excellent photos.

Just about the time I think I know the difference between Coop and Sharpy, I find out I don?t. I have posted three photos, one with a ruler, on Flickr. Opinions are welcome, especially discussion of field marks, etc.
