Water was almost completely gone this morning, and the only shorebirds were snipe heard and Killdeer seen, including very young chicks on the road headed back to the contact station. Pelicans have a daily fly-by to the west and are often over the Kiwa Trail. With ditches low the Virginia Rail show has been great.

Subject: [Tweeters] Ridgefield NWR shorebirds

Tweeters,

An early morning trip to Ridgefield NWR in Clark County yielded a few shorebirds on a mostly dried up Rest Lake:

Killdeer: 15

Least Sandpiper: 35

Western Sandpiper: 7

SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER: 1

Greater Yellowlegs: 1

Wilson's Snipe: 1

In addition to the almost complete lack of water, a young Peregrine walking around on the dried mud of the lake kept shorebird numbers down. I doubt if there will be any water after the next five hot and dry days.

Keep your eyes and ears skyward.

Jim
