You both raise an important point. We have all heard the expression, "loving nature to death"? That is a prospect that sooner or later all of us nature lovers -- hikers, birders, mushroomers, butterfly chasers, and scuba divers -- must come to terms with. On the one hand, ecotourism can be an incentive for local communities to protect nature as an economic asset; but on the other, ecotourism is also a disturbance to the wildlife being viewed. I have to ask myself questions like: will the rewards of penetrating that trackless wilderness outweigh my adverse impact on the species whose home it is? Is driving halfway across the state to see a rare vagrant really worth the carbon footprint of doing so?
I think Amy asks exactly the right question: are we contemplating moving the bird for its benefit, or for our enjoyment?

I know my opinion will be unpopular, but if we're really bird lovers, why not just leave the bird alone??? Why are WE putting the bird in danger with our actions??? I'm sure that the man is frustrated with people who cannot respect his property and his privacy because they have to put a new bird on their list.?? If he shoots the bird he probably will be facing a fine for violating the MBTA.?? But will it be only his fault??? I think it's time to get experts involved and back off, because our enthusiasm is obviously hurting this bird's prospect for survival.

I would question why anyone thinks that this bird needs to be relocated. By all Tweeter accounts people are reporting that it's doing quite well where it is. Is the thought that this bird isn't? Or is it so that moving it away from an unhappy property owner will allow others birders to (maybe) enjoy viewing it? If the answer is the latter, this idea sounds hardly ideal for the bird.
