Today I was watching a yellow and black bird sitting in an alder. Being
nearsighted, I figured it was an American Goldfinch. Suddenly I saw the
coral-colored head and grabbed my binocs. It was a male Western Tanager!
The first I've seen in ages. What a good close look, and not up in the
treetop!

As we were taught in journalism school, never assume anything!
