Hello All,

Bill and I spent a wonderfully sunny and hot day in the
mounded prairies part of the state-Mima Mounds, Scatter Creek, and Glacier
Heritage Preserve. Because these areas are more open, there are supposed to
be more "east side" type birds there. Of those we saw two: Meadowlark in
Mima Mounds and White-breasted Nuthatch at Scatter Creek. We also were
pleased to find a good number (10-12?) of Purple Martins occupying bird
boxes quite a ways from the nearest water, the Black River which runs along
the east side of Glacier Heritage Preserve, and a pair of nesting
Red-breasted Sapsuckers at Scatter Creek. We also heard, but didn't see,
Cassin's Vireos at Mima Mounds and House Wrens at Scatter Creek, birds I
associate with eastern Washington. Everywhere we went we noted how dry
everything is already.
