This reminds me of a similar experience I had last year while I was shopping in the Whole Foods Market in Bellevue. As I was browsing the cereal aisle, a rustling noise emerged from a large decorative potted plant atop one of the shelves.

I backed up to get a look inside the pot, and what else did I see but a Song Sparrow, poking around the base of the leafy shrub, on an island of dirt in the middle of the store! Surprised, I went to alert a store clerk. "Oh yeah," he said, "We get those little guys in here from time to time. They usually fly out after a few days." Whatever is in those pots must be pretty good! Though I can't imagine that anything in that store could be as fresh, local and organic as the seeds, fruits and insects they can find outside.

Later, I recall seeing the Song Sparrow perched atop one of the steel crossbars that hold up the lights, directly over my head, surveying his temporary kingdom.

I love Song Sparrows!
