Hello Tweets,

A birding friend of mine from BC was visiting San Juan Island last week. At Jackles Lagoon in American Camp, he saw 6 Baird's, 4 Western, 1 Least, and 2 Semipalmated Sandpipers all feeding with Killdeers on the western edge of the small lagoon. I have seen pictures he took; the Baird's and Semipalms are very nice birds for San Juan County!

Also, he had Vesper Sparrows and Black Oystercatchers on the island, as well as breeding Killdeers, a young Barred Owl eating a fledgling, and a Cassin's Vireo at Lakedale Resort! Good photo of that one, too. Some quality birds out there on San Juan, for sure.

By the way, he also mentioned something disheartening. Apparently, when he visited the Western Bluebird reintroduction center (a house with nest boxes and feeders), they told him that a great deal of the bluebirds had hit a bad storm during migration and that none had returned this year. Does anyone have any more information on this?

Though this year has been a bit tragic, the bluebird folks are holding out hope, my friend said; after all, that population is prone to a bit of vagrancy.

Good birding, Joshua Glant
