While walking along the beach at Alki this noon I noticed a flock of gulls
flushing off the water, and as I turned my eyes skyward, beheld a mature
Bald Eagle bearing down. The lone menu item remaining in the near vicinity
was a male Bufflehead. We watched as the Eagle continually swooped back and
forth at the Bufflehead, which just as persistently ducked below the surface
at each nadir. The strolling throng of walkers stopped, enthralled, many
videoing with their cell phones. After about 45 dives, the Eagle repaired
to a nearby customary roost tree, and almost instantly Mr. Bufflehead sprung
to the air and departed the scene.
