> Karen and I recently returned from two weeks of birding in the San Antonio/Corpus Christi area. The birding was excellent, but the weather reminded us of Fort Flagler in the winter. The first two days that we were there it rained with wind and a high temperature of 36. When we drove from SA to CC the rain was heavy with flash flood warnings. The upside of the bad weather was that there were no bugs or snakes and it may had enhanced the birding.

> One of the birds that we most wanted to see were Whooping Cranes. We were watching American White Pelicans along the coast when a man walked up and asked us if they were Whooping Cranes. We explained that they were pelicans. Then he said that if we followed him that he would take us to where he had last seen Whooping Cranes. What we thought was going to be a short drive ended up being fairly long, but this unlikely birding guide took us to a field on Goose Island where there were 9 Whooping Cranes and 2 Sandhill Cranes as well as many other birds.

> We also wanted to see Roseate Spoonbills. We were told that they could be seen at the Turnbull Birding Center on Mustang Island.

> Karen accidentally dropped her glasses into the alligator infested water at Turnbull Birding Center. So much for those glasses. It was a cold day, the norm for the trip, so we didn't see any alligators....until I got back to our motel room and viewed a video of a Nutria that I had taken!
