The Australian author Tim Low has written a fascinating book: "Where Song Began". His hypothesis is that Australia is the ancestral home for a large number of birds worldwide. He has great descriptions of the relationship of the ecology of Australia, the evolution of Australian birds and their relationship to other birds in the Southern and Northern Hemispheres.

Earlier this month the Australian Broadcasting Company produced a Catalyst Video Program: "Where Birdsong Began" that is a followup to Tim Low's book and introduces the genetic (DNA) and fossil evidence to support Low's hypothesis. See:
