Barbara and I have checked on the new arrivals at Lincoln Park three times
in the last two weeks. Today (5/1) we found a half-dozen BAND-TAILED
PIGEONS eating the blossoms at the tops of madrona trees. Last Saturday the
BARRED OWL carried something into its nestbox in the redwood grove near the
north parking lot, but we missed it today. Overheated NORTHERN FLICKERS
made most of the woodpecker noise, but we still could hear sporadic calls
from a PILEATED WOODPECKER. More PACIFIC-SLOPE FLYCATCHERS have arrived
since we saw our first of the season here last week. We couldn't remember
if we had ever seen two HUTTON'S VIREOS together before, but we did today,
briefly. Last week we saw the park's outraged crows in hot pursuit of a
COMMON RAVEN, but today we heard an undisturbed raven croak briefly; we
also came across an adult crow accompanied by a noisy juvenile. We saw a
CHESTNUT-BACKED CHICKADEE and a BROWN CREEPER enter their respective nests;
we also heard BUSHTITS in a nest but didn't watch it, so as to not draw the
attention of nearby STELLER'S JAYS. We heard a late-season RUBY-CROWNED
KINGLET last week, but not today -- by now it's probably singing in the
mountains. We found a HERMIT THRUSH all three days. Last week we saw
ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS and our first BLACK-THROATED GRAY of the season;
today we saw at least four ORANGE-CROWNED, heard multiple BLACK-THROATED
GRAYs, and spotted our first WILSON'S of the season. We had RED CROSSBILLS
and PINE SISKINS, along with the standard finches.


As we had lunch at home we watched two *melospiza* sparrows (Song &
Lincoln's) and three *zonotrichias* (White-throated, White-crowned, and
Golden-crowned) feeding in our backyard.
