Perhaps you saw a male red-breasted grosbeak. In certain lights they might appear to be completely black on top, but they are fairly red under the wings.? How orange it looks might be a result of the way light is hitting it.?

| What small black bird has orange under its wings? The web comes up with red wing blackbird but it's orange under, not on wings.
