Enjoyed a particularly wonderful birding moment, unplanned: While walking
back to a dorm after dark at Fort Worden in Port Townsend this past
weekend, a barred owl appeared as if out of nowhere and landed on a
signpost 5 feet away from me. It paid no attention to me other than a mild
glance, and then hopped to the ground, where it jumped around landing on,
presumably, insects, and eating them, often spreading its wings as it
hopped. It did this for several minutes before flying off again. Wow! I've
heard them often enough, but had never seen one before.
