Lake Sammamish State Park, King, Washington, US
Nov 3, 2015 8:00 AM - 1:03 PM
Protocol: Traveling
3.0 mile(s)
Comments: Sharon & Denis birded with the UW Retirement Assoc. Birders Ellen, Mark, Tom, Frank, Bettimae, Sally, Mary, Al, Bob & Mollly. Following an early start of traffic challenges and solid rain, the morning remained cloudy, with little rain & mist, turning to partial blue skies and sun breaks, 43-49F, 3-5 mph. HIGHLIGHTS: Spending time with this group of enthusiastic, eager and appreciative birders is always a highlight. From the lake edge at both beaches, we enjoyed watching 5 CANVASBACKS (2 males, 3 females) feeding with a large group of American Coots; several HOODED MERGANSERS; 3 grebe species--PIED-BILLED, HORNED AND WESTERN; a lone SPOTTED SANDPIPER; and 4 gull species--MEW, RING-BILLED, CALIFORNIA AND GLAUCOUS-WINGED. Most of the group had close views of a perched RED-BREASTED SAPSUCKER making the cat-like mewing sound as it tended its sapwells on a Birch Tree near Issaquah Creek. After a discussion about both Kinglet species having yellow feet on gray legs, most were given the opportunity to see this detail when a nearby RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET was feeding on a nearby bush (we also saw the Charlie Chaplin mustache on the wing (dark, half wing bar on secondaries). A male VARIED THRUSH perched at the top of a distant conifer, and we watched it tilt its head back, open its beak and emit a one-pitch whistle/trill/hummmm several times. A small group of GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROWS were feeding on a grassy edge near Issaquah Creek, and we took the time to study the field marks of this lovely bird. One of our last sightings of the day was a swirling flock of PINE SISKINS with their distinctive vocalizations. Life is Good! Submitted from BirdLog NA for Android v1.9.6
48 species (+4 other taxa)
