Comments: Sharon Aagaard and Stan Wood birded with 20 others at Eastside Audubon's monthly bird walk at Lake Sammamish State Park on November 18, 2015, from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm. Skies were mostly clear then cloudy, 41-53F, 1-4 mph. HIGHLIGHTS: A nice assortment of water birds were close to the lake edge: GADWALL, AMERICAN WIGEON, MALLARD, CANVASBACK (male and female), LESSER SCAUP, BUFFLEHEAD, HOODED MERGANSER, 3 female RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS (reported 8 other times on eBird); PIED-BILLED & WESTERN GREBES. As usual during the winter months, there was also a large group of gulls at the lake edge: MEW, RING-BILLED, HERRING AND GLAUCUOUS-WINGED. In addition to RED-TAILED HAWK & BALD EAGLE, we also saw a COOPER'S HAWK. The group especially enjoyed watching an ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD & a RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET feeding from sapwells made by a RED-BREASTED SAPSUCKER (which we later saw tending sapwells in a large Hawthorn tree in the old orchard). There was a perched, male VARIED THRUSH early on, and we later heard another. One lone CEDAR WAXWING flew in and perched high up in a tree in the parking lot. We heard and saw 8 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS in various areas. 50 species for the day, 134 for the year. Critters: Eastern Gray Squirrels, and a Beaver at the west beach. The next bird walk is WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 16. No pre-registration, just show up depending on your mood or the weather. Since this is a state park, a Discover Pass is necessary to park ($10 daily, $30 annual). Just inside the main park entrance (NOT the boat launch entrance off of Eastlake Sammamish Parkway), we meet in the large parking lot to the left, and park in the middle of the first and second rows. Submitted from BirdLog NA for Android v1.9.6.
50 species (+1 other taxa)
