Yesterday 35 of us enjoyed a great walk at Nisqually. It was clear and
cool, in the 40s, and we had a 14.0 high tide at 10:44 AM. With the recent
rains there was lots of water around and the wind storm cleared most of the
leaves off the trees.

Highlights included a NORTHERN SHRIKE, AMERICAN BITTERN and COOPER'S HAWK.

Things started out slow but by the time we got to the hands on area by the
education center we found our first mixed flock of the day. In it were both
KINGLETS, both CHICKADEES, ROBINS, a VARIED THRUSH, and a RED-BREASTED
SAPSUCKER. We also had SONG and GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROWS.

Along the maintenance road I spotted a COOPER'S HAWK that flew over a flock
of CACKLING GEESE that ignored it. The COOPER'S HAWK landed in the tree
line and afforded everyone great scope looks.

Waterfowl were scattered throughout the refuge including 2 EURASIAN WIGEON,
one behind the twin barns and one at the start of the estuary boardwalk.
Also from that area we observed the BITTERN in the marsh and the SHRIKE
along the closed part of the dike.

For the day I had 53 species including a pair of WOOD DUCKS at the visitor
center about 12:30,

For the year I now have 149 species.
