Today 22 of us enjoyed a cold walk at Nisqually. It was 31 degrees at 8:00
but it was sunny. We had a 5.9 low tide at 10:50 so lots of mud in the
reclamation area.

Highlights included a VARIED THRUSH near the education center and both
HOODED and RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS on McAllister Creek. We also got good
looks at a LINCOLN'S SPARROW at the twin barns overlook.

We started at the visitor center with a BEAVER on the pond and a PEREGRINE
FALCON in the big fir tree across the pond. At the education center we
encountered a small flock that included the VARIED THRUSH along with ROBINS
and DOWNEY WOODPECKERS. There was an ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD in the orchard.

The cold weather put a light coat of ice on many of the ponds but we did
manage to spot a GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE among some CACKLING GEESE in
the pond along the maintenance road.

Out at the twin barns overlook we spotted a LINCOLN'S SPARROW in with some
other sparrows in some blackberry brambles across the slough.

At the start of the estuary boardwalk we saw HOODED MERGANSERS, a
RED-BREASTED MERGANSER, and a EURASIAN WIGEON.

For the day I had 45 species and still have 149 for the year.

Mammals seen included the BEAVER, BLACK-TAILED DEER, and both HARBOR SEAL
and SEA LION in the Nisqually River.
