Tweeters,

Following up on Michael Hobbs sightings of Black-backed Woodpeckers recently posted on tweeters, a group of 9 birders returned to same area on Oct 6. Taking 9716 east at Blewett Pass from 97, then left after 3.7 mi on 9712, we found American Three-toed W. at about 3.2 mi out 9712, and a couple Black-backed W. around 3.7 mi., at least two drumming. (This species also at former hawk watch site near jct with 35.) Much of this area in standing burnt trunks, frequent evidence of Picoides bark-flaking.
Note: elk hunters throughout area, some camping, so consider orange vest if walking off road.

Good birding, Bob Sundstrom
