Today 34 of us enjoyed a wet walk at Nisqually. We started in the rain and
finished in the rain but had a couple of hours when it was dry. We had a
4.5 low tide at 12:53 so lots of mud and waterfowl out in the reclamation
area.

The highlight of the day was a RED-SHOULDERED HAWK out behind the twin
barns. It was first spotted flying into the tree line between the barns and
the marsh west of there. It lit and relocated a couple of times and
afforded good looks from the barns and along the new dike. A life bird for
many.

Other highlights included a couple of WILSON'S SNIPE at the visitor center
and 3 VIRGINIA RAIL together along the boardwalk out to the twin barns.

The SNIPE were there at the start but had moved off before I got there. The
VIRGINIA RAILS were seen next to the boardwalk foraging in the mud. There
was one to start and it was joined by two more before we left the area.

Water levels are rising and more and more waterfowl are showing up on the
refuge as the levels rise. NORTHERN PINTAIL and AMERICAN WIGEON are showing
up in greater numbers each week.

Besides the RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, we also saw BALD EAGLE, RED-TAILED HAWK,
NORTHERN HARRIER, PEREGRINE FALCON , and AMERICAN KESTREL.

For the day I saw 46 species and now have 146 for the year. The only mammal
I saw was a BLACK-TAILED DEER.
