Hi Terry
As I imagine other Tweeters have let you know, what you heard were Heermann's Gulls. They do sound like they're laughing. There are a lot of them around Port Townsend (where I'm hanging out) in summer, and the Edmonds breakwater is also a regular hang-out for them.
A few times I've thought that the Heermann's could be named the Mexican Laughing Gull. Recently I realized that, being a West Coaster, that I've never heard a real Laughing Gull, so I just snooped on the internet for Laughing Gull recordings, which was interesting. Maybe just West coast bias, but it seems to me that Heermann's are funnier. Maybe I just didn't hear good Laughing Gull recordings.
