Trip Report for the 6 September 2015 Westport Seabirds Trip



Despite an ominous start with rain and wind when we left the dock in the dark, we had a truly spectacular Westport Seabirds on Sunday, 6 September. Early indications of a interesting day included a Fork-tailed Storm-Petrel and 9 barely visible Elegant Terns inside Gray's Harbor on the way out. The first forty minutes past the outer buoy provided a trip's worth of highlights, the most dramatic being a Brown Booby, only the third record for this species in the long history of Westport Seabirds. Other highlights in this segment included a Buller's Shearwater, 6 Pink-footed Shearwaters, and 6 Fork-tailed Stork-Petrels, all unusually close to shore. By the time we reached the first of several fishing boats we encountered on the trip, the skies were clear and the winds had subsided. Though there were generally fewer birds at the boats than in August, we got excellent looks at a variety of species including Black-footed Albatross; Northern Fulmar; Pink-footed, Buller's, Sooty, and Short-tailed Shearwaters; Pomarine, Parasitic, and Long-tailed Jaegers and South Polar Skua; and Sabine's Gull. This was our best trip of the year for Arctic migrants with a total of 19 jaegers, 73 Sabine's Gulls, and 3 Arctic Terns. We had 3 Leach's Storm-Petrels, a species that has usually moved far offshore at this time of year, and 167 Fork-tailed Storm-Petrels. Mammals observed on the trip included Humpbacked Whale, Dall's Porpoise, Pacific White-sided Dolphin, Northern Fur Seal, Harbor Seal, and California and Stellar's Sea Lions.
