The other day I reported hearing Red-shouldered Hawk in the trees behind my place in Salmon Creek. Now I wonder if I've been taken in by some mimicry. Today I heard the hawk again, but the only bird in the area was a Steller's Jay. I've never heard a Steller's mimic a Red-Shouldered Hawk, only a Red-tailed Hawk, but I have found reports online of such mimicry.? It does make me wonder about the jay itself. Is it a local jay or has it moved north from an area where Red-shouldered Hawks are more common? How do these birds learn to mimic predators??
