You can take a real time look tonight by at?Seattle NEXRAD?and?Ocean Shores NEXRAD. (Langley Hill). ?On a clear night we know the return isn't rain. ?The colors you see are birds. ?Massive amounts of birds. On the left side is the control panel. ?The first picture you see is Composite Reflectivity. Click on loop to watch the migration in motion. ?Click on Velocity loop. ?You should see green to the North (top) and Red to the South (bottom). ?Green means the objects are moving toward the radar and Red away. ?North to South in the Fall. ?The opposite next Spring. ?Check the colors against the scale on the right to find the average speed the birds are showing. Last night it was 20 Kts but remember that is just an average. ?Scientists are able to separate the data into altitude layers with the fast flyers generally at higher altitudes.?
The show starts at sunset but doesn't get going good until 9-9:30 PM. It peaked last night around 11PM. ? And no you can't tell what birds are in the mix. ?They confirmed the geese by IDing their calls. ?For more information Google Radar Bird Migration. ?There are lots of articles and scientific studies on line. ?
