Hi Teresa,

I cannot speak to you about good locations, since I have little experience
in the matter (though this year's Hawk Migration Festival was held at Slate
Peak in the eastern North Cascades, so obviously that's considered a good
place to look), but I can tell you that the late September is the best time
of the entire year to watch migrating hawks!

Starting in the second week of September across the East and in Texas,
1,000s of Broad-winged Hawks swirl in great flocks called kettles above
mountain ranges and the Gulf Coast coastal plain. And at sites across the
U.S. and Canada, hawks are streaming along mountain ridges and riding
thermals on their way south by the thousands. We even get a few Broad-wings
over here in Washington from time to time in this time of year (though
apparently as birders have learned in the past couple years, the best place
to look for rare Broad-winged Hawks in Washington is Neah Bay around May
1st), and good numbers of this normally Eastern hawk species pass over Hawk
Hill in San Francisco. You can see their daily tallies here:

So yes, this is absolutely the best time of the year! In fact, you couldn't
have chosen a better time. :)
