Seattle-Few places on earth rival the rugged beauty and biological diversity of Washington state's North Cascades mountain range. With lowland valleys, dense forests and mountain peaks, this remarkable ecosystem is home to a rich array of wildlife and plants that make up one of the most intact wildlands in the U.S.-and it's located just a few hours from Seattle.

Discover the sights, sounds and stories of the people, plants and animals that make up the North Cascades with the Burke Museum's latest exhibit, Wild Nearby<http://www.burkemuseum.org/exhibits/wild-nearby?utm_source=pr-wild-nearby1&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=wild-nearby>. Inspired by Mountaineers Books' The North Cascades: Finding Beauty and Renewal in the Wild Nearby, the exhibit features beautiful large-scale photos from the book while putting you in the shoes of Burke researchers to examine the North Cascades using specimens and artifacts from the Burke Museum.



Find out about projects happening right now at the Burke Museum that are tracking changes to plants, wolverines, coastal tailed frogs and hairy woodpeckers in the region. Examine ancient artifacts which belong to the Upper Skagit Tribe, whose living tradition stretches back thousands of years in the North Cascades. Step into a full-scale replica of a fire lookout made by artist Tori Karpenko for a moment of observation alongside a beautiful painting of the North Cascades mountain range, with family-friendly spots to look out into the exhibit for unique views of the objects on display and touchable geology specimens which illustrate the geologic complexity of the region.

Get tips on how to enjoy the North Cascades at the Burke before heading out into the Wild Nearby this summer! Learn how to stay bear-safe while hiking and camping with the North Cascades National Park Service's Bear Trailer, and even get up-close to two, full-size, mounted grizzly bears! Visitors of all ages can also try out a climbing wall, play outdoor nature games, taste a special Wild Nearby-inspired ice cream made by Full Tilt Ice Cream, and more!
Also find out the best hikes to take this summer in the North Cascades. Talk to National and Washington State Park rangers and others about how to explore the North Cascades for a couple of hours, a couple of days, or even a couple of weeks. Touch North Cascade wolverine, bear, coyote and barred owl specimens. Test out backpacks, tents and other equipment to bring with you to the mountains.

Wild Nearby is based on the Mountaineers Books' The North Cascades: Finding Beauty and Renewal in the Wild Nearby, written by William Dietrich. The Wild Nearby exhibition was organized by the Burke Museum, University of Washington, created in partnership with Braided River, the conservation imprint of Mountaineers Books, and representatives from the National Park Services and North Cascades institute.

The Burke Museum is the Washington State Museum of Natural History and Culture. The Burke Museum is an active research museum that cares for 16 million geology, biology and cultural objects from Washington state and around the world, preserving natural and cultural history and generating new discoveries.
Founded in 1885 and designated the State Museum in 1899, the Burke Museum is the oldest public museum in Washington. The Burke Museum is located on the University of Washington campus, at the corner of NE 45th St. and 17th Ave. NE. Hours are 10 am to 5 pm daily, and until 8 pm on first Thursdays. Admission: $10 general, $8 senior, $7.50 student/ youth. Admission is free to children four and under, Burke members, UW students, faculty, and staff. Admission is free to the public on the first Thursday of each month. Prorated parking fees are $15 and partially refundable upon exit if paid in cash.
