High fog partly covered sky at beginning, but it was mostly sunny by the end
for the 23 of us that birded Eagles Pride GC today. Because our last three
outings were very wet, we didn't have a high species list for the year. That
changed today! Notable sightings include the following:

GREATER YELLOWLEGS (flyover) and WESTERN BLUEBIRD are new species for the
count, which celebrated its 3rd birthday this month (incept date: April
2013). (And if you're unsure what "incept" date is, you're probably not
familiar with the movie "Blade Runner.") We now have 105 species recorded
since that first outing. Considering that the site is mostly forest and
forest edges, 105 represents a pretty good diversity of species.

8 Warblers: ORANGE-CROWNED, MACGILLIVRAY'S, YELLOW-RUMPED, BLACK-THROATED
GRAY, TOWNSEND'S, HERMIT, and WILSON'S; plus COMMON YELLOWTHROAT. (See list
below for details.)

CASSIN'S and HUTTON'S VIREOs (good views on the two Cassin's)

WESTERN SCRUB-JAY (first sighting -- heard once two years ago; silent bird
today -- possible nest nearby?)

Today's species count (58) is the most we've recorded in one outing since we
started.



The JBLM Eagles Pride GC birders meet the third Thursday of each month at
8:00AM. Starting point is Bldg # 1514, Driving Range Tee, Eagles Pride Golf
Course, I-5 Exit 116, Mounts Road Exit. Upcoming walks include the

Orange-crowned Warbler 21

MacGillivray's Warbler 3 Yellow belly, distinct black hood darkest at
chest/belly interface transitioning to gray up neck and black again on head,
distinct pair of white eye arcs. Seen at close range near the 12th hole pond
(same area as last year) for extended periods by all/most of 23 birders. Two
others heard at other parts of the walk.

Common Yellowthroat 4 One near 12th hole pond; all others at Hodge Lake

Yellow-rumped Warbler 10

Black-throated Gray Warbler 2 One bird heard only; other bird well seen
by all observers (scope view) on cut-through to 14th tee.

Townsend's Warbler 2

Hermit Warbler 3 First heard repeatedly, successfully called in and
heard/identified, but only seen briefly. Another bird heard nearby (singing
at same time as 1st bird). Third bird heard behind Hodge Lake.

Wilson's Warbler 1 First heard, then observed at close range (25 ft)
for 10 minutes by 23 birders. Small, clean bright yellow underneath,
distinct black cap of male.

Chipping Sparrow 1 In grass between 18th fairway and golf driving
range.
