One first-winter plumage Golden-crowned Sparrow was among six sparrow
species, including Lincoln's, in the yard this morning. It's arrival is a
few days earlier than our average late summer arrivals over about 15 years.
The season combined with the showery weather has put a lot of migrants in
view in the last two days, such as flocks of Violet-green Swallows including
one or two Bank Swallows and a few Vaux's Swifts, good-sized flocks of Cedar
Waxwings and Evening Grosbeaks, and assorted warblers. Two or three
immature Black-headed Grosbeaks remain at feeders, well down from a high of
10 or so in late July. The last Rufous Hummingbirds coming to half a dozen
feeders seemed to have departed by August 28, after seven months of watching
this species in the yard. This is earlier than usual, as we typically have
one or two Rufous around through about Sept. 10.
