Tweets,

Today 28 of us enjoyed a cold day at Nisqually. It was 25 degrees at the
start and most of the ponds were frozen over. We had a 14.4 high tide at
11:27 so there was lots of water in the reclamation area...and lots of
birds.

Best of the day was a BEAVER at the visitor center pond at the start. It
made a brief appearance and headed for its den. Also on that pond were
MALLARDS, RING-NECKED DUCKS, AMERICAN WIGEON, and BUFFLEHEAD. One of the
MALLARDS appeared to be a MALLARD/WIGEON hybrid.

Our best action was in the orchard where we encountered 2 or 3 RED-BREASTED
SAPSUCKERS. They moved around quite a bit so it was hard to keep track of
who was who. We also had ROBINS, STARLINGS, GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROWS, and
both KINGLETS here.

The only raptors seen were a couple of BALD EAGLES, RED-TAILED HAWKS, and a
PEREGRINE FALCON out on the surge plain.

Out on the salt water we added GADWALL, NORTHERN PINTAIL, GREEN-WINGED
TEAL, NORTHERN SHOVELERS, COMMON GOLDENEYE, and HOODED MERGANSER to our
list. We added COMMON MERGANSER on the Nisqually River.

Some of the group found a VARIED THRUSH off the twin barns overlook and
CHESTNUT-BACKED CHICKADEE and BROWN CREEPER were added along the Nisqually
River side.

For the day I had 43 species with nothing new for the year. Mammals seen
were BEAVER, BLACK-TAILED DEER, and HARBOR SEAL in the Nisqually
River.

Until next week....
