Seasons Greetings fellow birders,
Last Sunday, December 18th, we held the Olympia Area Christmas Bird Count. We were fortunate with some pretty favorable weather and a good species count. The general sense from counters however, was that total numbers were low. The total species count looks to be about 131 with several areas reporting in after the compilation dinner.

There were some great highlights and a few count firsts, among there were: Williamson's Sapsucker, Orchard Oriole (awaiting final confirmation), Lesser Goldfinch, Black Phoebe, and Harlequin Duck. Worthy of note were 5 goose species (with Snow the least common), and 3 Swan. Lowlights included low numbers of loons, grebes and finches. And the only notable miss that come to mind right now was Common Murre following a declining trend, but possible a first time miss. Final results pending compilation of the totals fro the 16 count areas within the circle.
Cheers, good birding, and happy holidays,
Bill Shelmerdine,
Olympia WA
