A Christmas Eve gift from the weather gods, providing a very pleasant winter day. Although it was mostly just cloudy with some blue sky poking through by mid-day, the temps were only in the 30s and with no wind. The passerines seemed subdued but there was a great diversity of species, including a few that were new for the year. Bruce Lagerquist joined me after dawn; he heard a Barn Owl earlier.

Trumpeter Swan - a pair on the north shore; first of fall
Eurasian Wigeon - one male and another male hybrid Eurasian-American
Canvasback - 1 female mixed in with the large scaup flock; first of year
Cooper?s Hawk - 1 immature plus an adult male and female; each bird was seen at least twice (so maybe more than 3?)
Wilson?s Snipe - several in the flooded west meadow and in the soggy central meadow
SHORT-EARED OWL - calling repeatedly from the woods by the central meadow; FOY
Merlin - cruising flight over the meadows
Hermit Thrush - a couple, though different locations
BOHEMIAN WAXWING - at least 7; with a flock of over 100 Cedars and a couple dozen Robins; tall cottonwoods at NOAA fence line; FOY

For the day, 60 species; with CANV, SEOW and BOWA new, 136 species for the year.
