My wife and I both have Kowa 8x30 bins for hiking, kayaking, traveling when
birding isn't really on the agenda, etc. These are relatively small, cost
$99 at Eagle Optics, and are excellent quality for the price. Not being a
parent I'm not sure what the exact requirements would be for 6 year-olds
but these are nice bins:
