A thing to consider when talking about what a raptor can carry is what I learned from a presentation given by falconers. The Osprey, which would let you fish with a raptor, always flies off with its prey. The rest of the larger species, anyway, kill the prey and consume on the ground if it is too large. In this manner, a Golden Eagle can kill a Pronghorn. So that baldie could easily kill the dog but would try and eat it there.

In regards to my earlier post about reading an eagle could carry nine pounds, obviously another example of believing if I am reading it somewhere reputable it must be true...nope! Or maybe I just plain mis-remember it...quite possibly the real truth.

At any rate, thanks Dan and Bill.

I read that a bald eagle can only carry a four pound payload. I am inclined to believe that, as I once photographed one of the Lake Ballinger eagles struggle to carry a dead coot across the lake.
