Happy New Year to all.

Swan survey time has begun again. This year a 5 year comprehensive western WA survey is also being done (at least as much as possible).
The Hood Canal area around the Olympic Peninsula to Quinalt Lake was done this week via aerial survey. I have been doing these aerial surveys since about 1981 in collaboration with WDFW. This year we got a spectacular weather window for flying so did them early to be sure we got good coverage on the outer coastal area.

If anyone has swan observations in counties other than Whatcom, Skagit and Snohomish, please send them along to me. The official count period is from now through 3rd week in January with most general waterfowl counts being done the first 2 weeks in January by WDFW and USFWS. Your observations are important, especially in the more rural and remote locations of the state.

Also, please note that I am posting aerial photos of the surveys and other articles about the out of the way places swans are observed on our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/nwswans

Check it out. The Northwest Swan Conservation Association is the same local people continuing the work formerly done under The Trumpeter Swan Society?s Washington Swan Stewards (WSS no longer exists). There is much happening with habitat conservation, surveys, monitoring for lead poisoning and power line collisions and so much more.

And please remember the swan hotline number to report sick, injured or dead swans: 360-466-4345 x266 or you can contact NWSCA if you live outside Whatcom or Skagit counties.
