There was a Common Eider report from yesterday on ebird.

- Comments: "Dark and dull eider, clearly recognized by distinctive bill. No
white in front of speculum, and white patch near base of neck and breast.
Much darker than female in this species, brownish/black. Likely immature
(albeit confused) common eider."

I've had a brief conversation with one of the two reporters are here are the
details below. I plan to look later this afternoon.

Hi Aubrey, I saw an ebird report from someone with your name from the
Seattle waterfront of a Common Eider. This is an extremely rare sighting in
WA state. Was it you that reported this? And if so how confident are you in
the ID? There are only 3 accepted reports in WA with the last being in 2012.
Thanks Doug

Aubrey Sirman accepted your request.

Hi Doug, I am extremely confident of the common eider report

I do have a really terrible cell phone picture...but we spent a fair amount
of time making the ID

We were birding the waterfront near the ferris wheel

Great, thanks for the extra details. I'll be looking this afternoon. Did it
associate with any of the other birds on your checklist?

What really made me decide on the common eider versus the other eider
rarities was the shape of the face as well as the presence of white patches
near the face and neck. I think it may be an immature male

It was by itself

Eventually scared off by a passing boat

But if you find it and think it's something different let me know! It took
us so long to even make the common eider decision!!
