As an American, a little short of the 150 years mentioned, I don't understand it either.

Having worked in the mental health field for many years, I often compare this type of behavior to a young child that doesn't want to clean up his room or take a bath....

As a Canadian, if I were to live to be 150 years old, I will *never* understand you Americans and that territorial mean-spiritedness so many of you have. We had a NHOW show up once in Pitt Meadows and the owner couldn't have been more hospitable, even to giving birders coffee.
