On a more positive note, I cannot help noticing that, 43 years since DDT was banned, birds of prey seem to have recovered, and formerly rare ones are no longer rare. It was yesterday I saw a Peregrine Falcon swooping over the industrial piers at the Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, stooping twice at the same pigeon, and twice missing it. This was over water -- if it had connected, it would have had to pluck its fallen prey from the water before it sank. This was not the first Peregrine over Bremerton; on the contrary, I nearly forgot to mention it because I see them so often now.
