Dear Tweets,

Here is a letter I wrote to several decision makers about the on-going illegal occupation of the Malheur NWR. I urge all bird-loving folks to write similar letters. I have included a list of relevant links for making such comments. Please feel free to borrow or get ideas from my letter. I?ve also submitted a version of it to the ?letters to the editor? section of the Seattle Times.

Thanks!

Dear (Decision Maker),

I am writing to express my growing outrage and concern over the illegal occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge by armed extremists and by the almost complete lack of response by local and federal law enforcement agencies. Far from dwindling, the occupying forces are presently acting with complete impunity, freely resupplying, recruiting additional extremists from around the country, and using public lands as a platform for their absurd ideology. This must come to an end.

I've lived in Oregon and Washington all my adult life, and as a biologist and a science teacher, I've used the Malheur N.W.R. on many occasions, both for scientific research and for naturalist-based recreational activities. I have also taken classes at the Malheur Field Station and participated in organized field trips to the refuge. I can testify from personal experience as to both the value of the refuge to wildlife and to the general public. The Malheur N.W.R. is one of the key refuges in the entire system in terms of its importance to both migratory and resident bird and wildlife species. Moreover, the refuge plays a significant role in the lives of many residents in the Pacific Northwest, including the citizens of Harney Co., who gain substantial economic value from these public lands.

It is time that law enforcement agencies bring a swift and decisive end to this terrorist-style invasion of public lands and begin the prosecution of the participants for their multiple illegal actions, which at present include removal, defacement, and destruction of federal property, assault and intimidation of members of the public attempting to use public lands, theft and illegal use of government equipment, construction of illegal roads, and hacking into government and personal communications in the refuge computer system.

I urge you to do all in your power to end this occupation at the earliest possible time.

Thanks very much,

Mark Egger
